Symptoms of Stye5

  • Small, painful lump on or inside the eyelid or around the eye 
  • The skin around the stye may be swollen and red and the stye may be filled with yellow pus. The redness may be harder to see on brown and black skin 
  • Your eye may be red and watery but your vision should not be affected.

What is an eye infection? 

Eye infections can develop when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites enter the eye and begin growing there.6  


How do I know if I have an eye infection? 

An infected eye will start to look and feel different. Early signs may include: 7  

  • Redness 
  • Itching or irritation 
  • Eye pain 
  • Watery eyes
  • Swelling 


Caring for your eyes to help prevent eye infections is important, especially if you wear contact lenses. You may not be able to avoid an eye infection, however you can take steps to reduce your risk.
